Set in the bright streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the 1980s, Yakuza 0 is a prequel to Sega’s renowned series. Through its well-written narrative, captivating combat, and seamless fusion of dramatic intrigue and comedy, this installment tells the origin stories of Kazuma Kiryu and the fan favourite Goro Majima, immersing players in its intricate universe.

The story of Yakuza 0 is an engrossing investigation of the criminal underworld, where corruption and honor collide. Majima and Kiryu, with their different personalities, negotiate the intricate world of Yakuza mystery. The experience is captivating and unforgettable due to the outstanding storytelling.

Yakuza 0’s gameplay creates a colorful collage of interactive experiences by skillfully combining fighting combat, exploring the city’s streets on foot, and a wide range of extra activities. Combat is gratifyingly intense, letting players unleash strong combos and swap between Majima’s and Kiryu’s various styles. You can play a variety of games in the open-world settings of Kamurocho and Sotenbori, such as street fights, business management, and karaoke.

Despite being released in 2018, Yakuza 0 features intricate character designs and animations that add to the overall immersion of the game, along with well designed environments that evoke the spirit of 1980s Japan.

Yakuza 0 is one of my all time favourite games, and it is the first of the Yakuza series that I have played. Even though the game can be a bit goofy at times, the story and characters are written so well that it is impossible not to like them. My favourite part about the game is easily how goofy it is, as there are an endless amount of options that can be done, but my favourite is the karaoke minigame. (Me and my friends had a lot of fun with the karaoke so I decided to include a clip which can be found at the end of the page)

Score: [9/10]
